Ahead of a major international forum bringing together government energy ministers, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss the safe and secure maritime deployment of nuclear energy, Sargent & Lundy will share insights from its more than 70 years of nuclear innovation.

Sargent & Lundy Project Director Josh Best is a featured speaker at the U.S. Industry Day conference Aug. 25 in Washington, D.C., hosted jointly by the Nuclear Energy Institute and the U.S. Department of Energy. He will discuss Sargent & Lundy’s extensive nuclear capabilities, including design engineering, regulatory and licensing, security, instrumentation and controls, plant support services, owner’s engineering, and nuclear consulting.
In July, the firm signed a memorandum of understanding with Samsung Heavy Industries to collaborate on developing and deploying a floating small modular reactor standard platform. Under the agreement, Sargent & Lundy is collaborating with SHI to develop a technology agnostic FSMR standard platform.
The Industry Day conference precedes the International Atomic Energy Agency’s two-day forum on its Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea, or ATLAS, initiative. Energy and industry leaders from around the world will attend to discuss the legal, regulatory, and technical challenges of using nuclear technology to fuel commercial shipping and potentially deliver reliable energy to remote and coastal communities, including for desalination and offshore energy production.
Sargent & Lundy is a pioneer in commercial nuclear power. The firm designed and engineered the first experimental large boiling water reactor and has since designed 34 utility-scale reactors. The firm is also the engineer of choice for nearly all operating U.S. nuclear power plants. Through its nuclear consulting expertise, the firm helps owners and operators navigate complex regulatory environments, manage aging assets, and advance new nuclear technologies.
