Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) at Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant
Project Highlights
- Multi-disciplined specialty equipment design team.
- Procurement and fabrication specifications.
- Title III engineering support during fabrication and factory acceptance testing.
- Testing completed 16 weeks ahead of schedule.
Project Description
Sargent & Lundy developed innovative designs for several types of high-precision furnaces that support the processing of selected components. These furnaces are both one-of-a-kind and first-of-a-kind. The engineering disciplines included electrical, mechanical, instrumentation and control, (I&C) and structural to perform calculations ensuring compliance with all performance and process requirements. The I&C effort involved significant control system programming to ensure time-temperature profile requirements could be met.
The project team completed testing on the equipment 16 weeks ahead of schedule and earned a 2025 Bechtel Global Supplier Award for overcoming complex equipment design challenges.
Project Scope
Sargent & Lundy assembled a multi-disciplinary design team to develop final designs for several different furnace types. In addition to a complete set of drawings to support fabrication, the Sargent & Lundy design team produced procurement and fabrication specifications as well as testing procedures. Numerous Sargent & Lundy personnel maintained an on-site presence at the fabricator to support the effort and the factory acceptance testing before the hardware systems were shipped to Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
