Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Subsea Transmission Links Project Power System Studies
Project Highlights
- HVDC converters and subsea transmission links to supply ADNOC industrial complexes on offshore islands.
- Integrating offshore systems into the onshore electric grid.
Project Description
Project Lightning calls for the delivery of bulk power from the onshore grid network to ADNOC’s offshore production facilities. Samsung C&T is leading the project with support from Sargent & Lundy, which is providing technical advisory services on converter and cable designs, as well as being responsible for key power system studies subject to the grid operator’s approval. The project consists of two independent subsea HVDC systems, comprised of transmission cables and onshore and offshore voltage source converter stations (2x1GW, ±320 kV DC symmetrical monopole and 2x600MW, ±400 kV DC bipole configurations).
Project Scope
Technical advisory for the design and engineering of the subsea cables, interfacing equipment and components, converter stations, and gas-insulated substations (GIS)
Power system studies:
- Preliminary TRV studies for the GIS.
- Harmonic impedance locus identification and analysis study.
- Offshore system power flow models conversion and integration.
- AC protection and coordination study.
- Grid Code Compliance report.
