Installation of a 10 ton/day CO2 capture pilot skid at Calpine’s Los Medanos Energy Center
Project Highlights
- Retrofit pilot project within a compact site.
- Limited site facilities available.
- Cost changes due to inflation and post pandemic global supply chain challenges.
Project Description
Project Enterprise is a groundbreaking carbon capture demonstration pilot system installed at Calpine’s Los Medanos Energy Center, a 678-megawatt gas-fired power station in Pittsburg, California. The project, funded primarily through a DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory cooperative agreement, aimed to prove the technology developed by ION Clean Energy is capable of capturing >95% of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in a cost-efficient way. This project is a critical step toward deploying this technology at full-scale on natural gas plants across the country and ultimately help utilities achieve their net-zero carbon emission targets.
Project Scope
Sargent & Lundy’s scope of work included the preliminary layout and cost estimates, procurement of initial project approvals, final detailed engineering, balance-of-plant (BOP) equipment acquisition, and subcontract of the equipment installation contractor.
During the design phase, Sargent & Lundy also completed the layout of all BOP infrastructure necessary to tie the pilot skid and BOP equipment into the existing plant. This included all piping, cabling, and flue gas duct. In addition, the firm completed the preliminarily design of the BOP foundations and steel structures necessary based on the preliminary CO2 island process modules.
During the final design, Sargent & Lundy worked with our construction partner, Graycor, to finalize the material order and procurement of the commodities. This included concrete, rebar, piping, pipe supports, cable, and conduits. This allowed material procurement to occur in parallel to equipment procurement.
