NuScale 6-module Small Modular Reactor
Project Highlights
- NuScale is the first and only SMR to receive design approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
- The NuScale Power Module design is based on proven pressurized water-cooled reactor technology, and was developed to supply energy for electrical generation, district heating, desalination, commercial-scale hydrogen production, and other process heat applications.
Project Description
Sargent & Lundy’s standard plant design deliverables support NRC licensing efforts, construction cost-estimating, and are the starter-kit for future site-specific installations of an SMR plant using NuScale Power Modules. The standard plant design utilizes bounding input parameters so a plant can be sited in a wide variety of locations, only needing to reconcile the design for the procured equipment and demonstrate that site-specific conditions are bounded by the standard plant design conditions.
Project Scope
Between 2019 and 2022, Sargent & Lundy produced over 11,000 design deliverables across all major engineering disciplines (e.g., mechanical, electrical, HVAC, civil/structural, architectural, instrumentation and controls) for the nuclear island of the standard SMR plant. The three buildings in the nuclear island are the reactor building, control building, and radwaste building. Sargent & Lundy deliverable types included:
- Piping and instrumentation drawings
- System design descriptions
- Process control narratives
- Hydraulic analysis and piping analysis
- Electrical single line drawings
- Piping isometric drawings
- General arrangement and architectural drawings
- Structural steel and concrete calculations and drawings
- Steel-composite wall module calculations and drawings
- Equipment and instrument lists
- Datasheets
Sargent & Lundy also developed the nuclear island portion of the full NuScale 3D Building Information Model (BIM) that included:
- Equipment
- Small and large bore piping
- Electrical raceway
- HVAC ductwork
- Steel Composite walls, concrete, and structural steel
