Project Highlights
- First-of-a-kind MAN Energy Solutions (MAN ES) RICE project in the U.S.
- Engines have the highest power output in the market.
Project Description
Sargent & Lundy was contracted to provide engineering, procurement and construction management (EpCM) services for a new 120-MW plant consisting of six MAN ES reciprocating internal combustion engines capable of producing the highest power output in the market. The 18V51/60G engines are the first of their kind in the U.S. market and were selected for their ability to pair well with solar energy production. In addition to the engines, MAN ES is also designing and providing the major power island auxiliaries based on Sargent & Lundy’s balance of plant specifications. The project includes the installation of a standby diesel generator, sized to black start the new facility, as well as a heat recovery system for efficient engine start up in peaking applications, storing, and using latent heat from the engine in a closed-circuit heating system.
The new, highly efficient facility will run on natural gas, with the ability to burn up to 5% hydrogen, and replace a recently retired coal-fired plant. This project will significantly contribute to Lakeland Electric’s commitment to providing safe, flexible, fast-response generation that pairs well with solar.

Project Scope
Sargent & Lundy’s overall scope included:
- Phase 1 preliminary engineering and conceptual design.
