Browns Ferry Subsequent License Renewal (SLR)
Project Highlights
- Sargent & Lundy supported the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in developing the Browns Ferry Units 1, 2, and 3 SLR application, as well as the SLR business case.
- Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approval of the SLR application for renewal of operating licenses for Browns Ferry Units 1, 2, and 3 for 20 additional years.
Project Description
The current operating licenses for Browns Ferry Units 1, 2, and 3 expire in 2033, 2034, and 2035, respectively. TVA is pursuing SLRs to renew the operating licenses for an additional 20 years. The SLR application process requires extensive analysis to evaluate the effects of aging on plant structures, systems and components (SSCs) and to determine the requirements for aging management programs during the SLR period of extended operation. Additionally, utilities such as TVA that pursue SLR must consider the business case for extending the operating life of their nuclear power plants.
Project Scope
TVA contracted Sargent & Lundy to perform analyses required for the SLR applications, including time-limited aging analysis (TLAA) for various SSCs, life extension for EQ equipment and cables, further evaluations for inaccessible concrete and containment structures, and cost estimating for severe accident mitigation alternatives. Sargent & Lundy also provided licensing support, such as development of the TLAA section of the SLR application. Additionally, Sargent & Lundy developed a comprehensive list of major capital projects that are expected for nuclear life extension, as well as cost estimates, schedules, and plans for execution of those projects, which provides essential input into the business case for pursuit of SLR
