The Tennessee Valley Authority has announced that it is leading an application for a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Generation III+ Small Modular Reactor Program. Sargent & Lundy is one of the partners on the $800 million grant, which will support the design and construction of the nation’s first SMR. If awarded, the grant would accelerate the construction of an SMR at TVA’s Clinch River Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, by two years, with commercial operation planned for 2033.
Sargent & Lundy brings to the project almost 135 years of engineering expertise, with a decades-long, proven track record of supporting nuclear projects for TVA and other leading utilities. Since 2020, the firm has worked with TVA on site-specific design and licensing for one or more SMRs at the Clinch River Site.
