UPDATE: The Experience POWER conference has been canceled due to the expected impact of Hurricane Milton. Find more information here.

Sargent & Lundy leaders from technical, legal, and training teams will share their clean energy and inclusion insights with industry experts from across the country at the Experience POWER conference in Orlando, Florida, Oct. 9-11. POWER Magazine’s event brings stakeholders across the entire energy space (from generation to transmission, distribution, and supply) together to learn how to navigate the energy transition while keeping organizational goals on track.

Sargent & Lundy’s delegation of industry leaders representing disciplines from across the energy sector will bring a wide breadth of experience and perspectives on topics facing the industry as it implements new technologies and moves toward meeting decarbonization goals. The three-day conference will feature technical presentations on hydrogen production and an example of a first-of-a-kind project using green hydrogen to generate clean energy in Florida.

Women in Power is a theme of this year’s conference and Sargent & Lundy will be sharing how the company is advancing the role of women through recruiting, training, and developing leadership. The firm will also be hosting the Women in Power Lounge, a disco-themed networking space where all conference attendees are welcome to gather outside the session rooms. Sargent & Lundy’s team will be leading and participating in the following sessions.

  • Innovations in Electrolysis: Advancing Clean Hydrogen Production. Brendan Jones will present on choosing between the electrolysis technologies available for clean hydrogen production. His presentation will include a case study for determining the most feasible and cost-effective technology to utilize at two separate existing power generation sites based on available electrical power, land availability, and opportunities for integration.
  • Navigating Carbon Neutrality: Permitting and Innovation. Senior Project Manager Wayshalee Patel will moderate and Environmental Associate Anna Rausch will present during this session exploring essential strategies for navigating permits in carbon capture projects. Rausch will discuss recent lessons learned from permitting a variety of carbon capture technologies, including critical items to consider at the start of project planning. Changes to air pollutant emissions can be difficult to quantify during early project planning, and starting the permitting process before a project is mature can risk wasting the efforts of federal regulators. Rausch will discuss air permit applicability and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) triggers and concerns.
  • Power Up Your Workforce: Strategies for Building a Pipeline of Energy Leaders. Vice President of Learning & Organizational Change DeAnna Meyers will speak on a panel about identifying and developing the strong energy industry leaders of the future in their existing workforce. Meyers and the other panelists will share recruitment strategies and best practices for talent identification. Learn how to assess soft skills, foster leadership development within an organization, and build solid mentoring programs. The panel will conclude with an audience Q&A session, allowing attendees to engage with the speakers and delve deeper.
  • Women in Power: Leading Change from the Inside. Wayshalee Patel will moderate this panel, with participation from Senior Vice President, General Counsel & Director of Legal Services Jill Liska. As the energy transition gains speed, the value of diversity becomes more evident. Panelists will share their experiences and strategies for recruiting more women into the energy sector. They will focus on leadership advancement and exploring the ways women can break barriers. The discussion will delve into effective career pathing, offering insights into navigating and overcoming obstacles in the workplace.
  • Hydrogen in Action: A Compilation of Case Studies. Marc Prasse, a hydrogen development specialist for the firm, will join Duke Energy’s Peter Hoeflich to present the DeBary Green Hydrogen Project. This first-of-a-kind project presents a unique opportunity for Duke Energy and other utilities to produce their own carbon-free fuel for later use in clean power generation. Hoeflich will discuss Duke Energy’s vision, how the project fits into their future generating portfolio, permitting, site selection, project development, selecting the team, and project execution. Prasse will walk through the different systems on the project required to create a fully functional integrated system.
  • Decarbonization Strategies and Policy Impacts for the Electric Power Sector. Environmental Associate Tim Eiden will present on the role of life cycle analysis (LCA) in modeling and evaluating the global warming potential of greenhouse gas emissions associated with installing carbon dioxide capture systems, often at existing facilities. Eiden will discuss cradle-to-delivered product impacts from original energy input through construction, combustion, transportation, and distribution. Wayshalee Patel will moderate.

The Experience POWER event unites every sector within the energy industry to engage in open, collaborative discussions and work together towards finding the best way forward, acknowledging the multifaceted nature of the challenge and the complexity of the solution. Sargent & Lundy’s team will be on hand to discuss its experience delivering innovative results with attendees during the conference.
