In its newly released 2024 Top Design Firms Sourcebook, Engineering News-Record reaffirmed Sargent & Lundy’s leading market position in the power and energy industry. The firm ranked fourth overall in the power market, fueled by strong performance in several sectors. The firm either held its position or ranked higher in each of its categories. Sargent & Lundy ranked third in two new engineering design categories, hydrogen and battery storage, demonstrating its commitment to first-of-a-kind projects and emerging technologies.

Boosted by a nearly 23% increase in revenue, the firm ranked fourth overall in the power market reclaiming a familiar place within the top five in the category. Sargent & Lundy has placed within the power market’s top five for 19 out of the past 20 years the rankings have been conducted. Earlier this year, Sargent & Lundy made significant gains across all relevant categories, placing 25th overall among the publication’s Top 500 Design Firms.

The firm posted some of its strongest gains in conventional markets, providing engineering services for fossil fuel-powered generation plants, improving its rank from No. 6 in 2023 to No. 3 in 2024. In the pipeline category for the oil and gas sector, the firm moved up five spots to No. 17 this year. For the first time, the firm placed among the top 50 design firms in the petroleum market, making a strong debut at No. 42.

Sargent & Lundy maintained its position in the top two in nuclear power as it continues to support the existing nuclear fleet along with the development of next generation small modular reactors and advanced reactors capable of providing reliable, safe, carbon-free energy. The firm has been a pioneer in the nuclear industry for the past 70 years and saw a more than 20% gain in revenue through its engineering, design, analysis, compliance, and other innovative work in nuclear power.

The rankings measure design-specific revenues for the 500 largest U.S.-based design firms, both publicly and privately held. They provide a benchmark for each firm’s performance in the prior year and highlight trends across the engineering, architecture, and construction industry.

“These numbers confirm what we’ve been seeing as the appetite for new energy continues to grow,” said Sargent & Lundy Chairman, President, and CEO Victor Suchodolski. “Through our experience and commitment to innovation, we’re helping our clients take on the demands of today while providing a responsible and sustainable path for the future.”
