Sargent & Lundy Contributes to New DOE-Funded Studies on Direct Air Capture Technologies

Developments from carbon capture and conversion studies may help combat climate crisis


May 11, 2022 – Sargent & Lundy will be supporting two significant front-end engineering design (FEED) studies recently awarded funding by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Both studies are related to the advancement of direct air capture (DAC) technologies – a process that separates carbon dioxide (CO2) from ambient air. Funding is designed to prove these technologies out at scale, accelerate their deployment, and, in conjunction with aggressive decarbonization, play a critical role in combatting the climate crisis.

The Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio, received nearly $2.5 million in DOE funds for its Nuclear Direct Air Capture with Carbon Storage (NuDACCS) project. Researchers will leverage available thermal energy from a nuclear power plant for a DAC system that will separate CO2 from ambient air for off-site geologic storage. Sargent & Lundy will assist in defining system costs, performance, and business case options.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Prairie Research Institute (PRI) received nearly $3.5 million in DOE funds and will focus on using the DAC and CO2 conversion technologies developed by CarbonCapture Inc. and CarbonCure, respectively, in an advanced DAC and utilization system coupled to CO2 conversion at U.S. Steel’s Gary Works in Gary, Indiana, to separate CO2 from ambient air and convert the CO2 into concrete products.  If implemented, the designed system would be larger than any currently existing DAC collector. Sargent & Lundy will provide the constructability review and costing of the DAC’s integration within the steel plant.

These projects will be managed by the National Energy Technology Laboratory and are expected to help DOE accelerate the development of this climate-critical technology while supporting the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
