Abstract—Projections of population growth in the metropolitan Tucson area require that the electric transmission grid in the region be expanded and upgraded. A key component of this expansion is a new 500-kV transmission line northwest of Tucson originating at the Pinal Central Substation, a major regional hub with access to numerous generating facilities, and extending approximately 66 km to the Tortolita Substation.
