Project Description:

Sargent & Lundy initially began work on the natural gas-fired Hillabee Energy Center project in 2001. Engineering scope was for all detailed engineering and design, including, site development, civil design, design criteria, piping and instrumentation diagrams, piping physical drawings, natural gas yard, power and control cabling, structural steel and foundations, procurement support, onsite field engineering support during construction, as well as construction/startup support.

The Hillabee project uses Siemens-Westinghouse 501G combustion turbines in a 2x2x1 configuration and incorporates a wet cooling system with single-row counterflow cooling tower. Makeup water is potable-quality from nearby Alexander City via a newly installed water pipeline. The project was suspended by Calpine in spring 2003 with construction at +60% complete and engineering substantially complete.

In 2008, Constellation Energy acquired the unfinished plant and authorized Sargent & Lundy to restart the engineering effort, with commercial operation achieved in 2009. The 740‑MW Hillabee Energy Center joined Exelon Power’s fleet in 2012 as part of the Exelon/Constellation merger.
