The "Rule of 72" was discussed at the Citibank IRA workshop in April and the IDS/American Express "Achieving Financial Success" workshop this week. The Rule of 72 tells you approximately how long it will take for your investments to double. Divide your rate of return (8%, for example) into 72 and you've got your answer - nine years. The Rule of 72 assumes your investments are tax-deferred and earning compound interest. |
