Petra Nova Carbon Capture Project Wins ENR ‘Best Projects’ and ‘Excellence in Safety’ Awards of Merit

Sargent & Lundy served as Owner’s Engineer for the project, recognized by ENR as one of the best in the Texas & Louisiana region

October 31, 2017 - Engineering News-Record (ENR) has recognized the Petra Nova Post-Combustion Carbon Capture Sequestration Project with two Awards of Merit in its ENR Regional Best Projects award program for the Texas & Louisiana region; the Energy/Industrial Award of Merit Excellence in Safety and the Best Project Award of Merit. Sargent & Lundy served as the Owner’s Engineer for Petra Nova, providing engineering services for the project and supporting NRG/Petra Nova throughout the development of this initiative to retrofit an existing coal‐fired power plant with commercial-scale carbon capture through its completion.

In addition to being the first of its kind, this is the largest commercial-scale post-combustion carbon capture retrofit in the world. The captured CO2 is transported by pipeline to a mature oil field and used to increase oil production with enhanced oil recovery technology.

Sargent & Lundy’s work on the project included engineering and other technical support for the NRG application for a U.S. DOE grant as part of the Clean Coal Power Initiative Program (CCPI), multiple front end engineering and design (FEED) studies, and integration of the carbon capture technology into the existing systems at NRG’s WA Parish Unit 8 coal‐fired power plant.

A joint venture of Petra Nova Holdings LLC (a subsidiary of NRG Energy, Inc.) and JX Nippon Oil Exploration Limited (a subsidiary of JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration Corporation) built and is operating the facility. The system captures 90% of the CO2 in the processed flue gas from the Parish plant near Houston. The project will generate revenue with the increased oil production at the West Ranch oilfield.

“Congratulations to Petra Nova for this well-deserved recognition. This project is a significant contribution to expanding cost-effective options for reducing the environmental impact of existing energy resources,” said Tom White, Chairman, President & CEO of Sargent & Lundy. “We feel privileged to have participated in this forward-looking project from its inception through final execution.”

Key contributors to the project include lead design firm Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America Inc., general contractor
TIC (The Industrial Co.), and balance of plant engineer Kiewit Engineering.
